This weekend, i am getting into a moni van with 5 others to drive 4 hours to ski mt. snow. this should be fun. as there are 22 people in one house. which only sleeps 16 technically.

last time this group of friends went on a trip together:
- someone's mom did a body shot off of another's chest dent
- we nearly got kicked out of an apple orchard
- if we didnt eat wendys, we only ate pancakes
- boys were bodysurfing a 15 passenger van, naked, before we even got to the bronx

this should be fun. especially since i have bronchitis & have not been skiing since sundance 2 years ago. hopefully the bruising will be to a minimum, and no one will drowned in the hot tub.

yay for snow gods. i haven't been to mt. snow in over 15 years. but they are celebrating mardi gras this weekend....this could be AMAZING.

London bridges falling down, falling down...

london has been, to say the very least...interesting. not because of the sights i have seen. But because I think London has it out for me.

you see, every trip I take to london seems to have its problems. nearly 10 years ago, on my first trip, what was intended to be a four day trip, turned into 2 1/2, along with a 14 hour plane ride & an unexpected stop at a foreign military base for emergency repairs. now, i dont complain, as i am always glad for an emergency stop vs something worse. But needless to say, my first trip was...a little shorter than anticipated.

This trip has not been without its...issues? the first began when my friend who I was suppose to visit showed up at my work unexpectedly. alas, she was deported. and as we were soon to find out, the british immigrantion group likes to take there time getting visas back to you following a deportation.

so London became a solo trip. so far.
luckily, some gracious friends have been kind enough to show me around. I have seen the famous Brick Lane ( and purchased some yummy mangos)...the artist markets are amazing...and so many...and the best indian food..I mean its brick lane.

jet lag always hits me at weird times...

xoxo

Hello Brooklyn

so after unofficially living in brooklyn for about 10 months recently, only to abruptly not, it is official...i am now a resident.
I know, i am a little late on the hipster/scenster trend, but i wasn't really paying attention to it anyways.

This weekend my hot asian friend San & I are moving into a cute loft space in williamsburg, off the Bedford L. It's super cute, in an old factory, so it has personality, and one of the walls is already magenta, so it was destiny.

Plus, it has a bigger bathtub than any of the apartments I have lived in the past few years, so I am super stoked for extra long baths!

The LES has been great to me over the last few years, but at this point the bridge & tunnelers can keep it- along with the high rent & small space!

Wish me luck. I am going to try to actually keep up to date with this blog. I know it is nothing really exciting, but it’s what I got. Sorry for the abstractness in some elements. But they are just thoughts.

A few quick thoughts right now:

- I will post the free shows list soon. I know this is posted a lot of other places, but I find
comfort in doing mine. Camp Meeska will start again soon.
- Mud- don’t be afraid to run in it. Sometimes it can be fun.
- Cheating. Whether it is mental, physical or emotional, be adult about it not to do it.
- Kickball is awesome. Most of the time.
- Yoga- how bendy can I get. Time to find out.
- Regina Spektor- even awesome when backlight by a gothic set synagogue with thunder &
lightening.
- You can’t ever really prepare yourself, even when you were going to do it

It’s on the rise (and not in a good way)

So today I had my most horrific NY experience yet. I grew up in the suburbs around here, so I am use to seeing a lot. I have had a crazy woman thrown dirt & water on me at a restaurant ( the beer garden was too loud at 8pm apparently), seen homeless men drop their pants in the middle of the sidewalk to use the bathroom, etc.

But today was the worst yet.
While riding the 4 train to work, in the middle of rush hour, I found the man next to me was exposing himself!

When I had gotten onto the train, it was already very crowded. At one point I felt someone touch my bum, but figured it was just the crowd being bustled onto the train- It happens all the time! At one point I double checked to make sure that my metro card was still in my back pocket and concentrated on my balancing act, as I had no ability to hold onto a pole.

As we near the first stop I realize that the guy behind me is constantly jutting me in the back. And it is the same movement too, not just the normal jostling of the train. So I turn around to find out what is going on…and he is exposing himself!

In my horror, I just gasp, “Oh My God!” and push myself next to a girl standing next to the door. I apologize to her & let her know what is going on, while the asshole just turns around.

I was so disgusted by the whole thing that I just got off & walked to another car. And this makes me mad.

I am now annoyed with myself because I didn’t DO anything about it. I was so disgusted by it I just threw myself out of the car & let the guy get away with it.

I had been reading stories about it in the NY daily papers, but really never thought that it would happen during the rush hour on the 4 train no less. Full of court employees & Wall Street Bankers!

Sundance...the slow recovery

So I am back from Sundance (and have been for almost a week, sorry!) and am slowly recovering. 8 days in Utah & I have learned to appreciate wide streets & powder on 10,500 high ski mountains. And no that is not a drug reference, but actual snow produced by clouds!

Sundance started out a bit slow. We had no tickets to ANY movies until Wednesday, so I was a bit worried.
We arrived late Friday night, to late to go out to any of the “drinking clubs” in Park City, so we just started off on Saturday. We caught a Slamdance Shorts program entitled “Skin”. It was essentially the sex shorts program. There were a few good really good shorts, such as “Dirty Glitter,” and “Phone Sex Grandma”.
After watching the Steelers get into the Superbowl, (part of dating a Steelers fan), and a “Half Nelson” cocktail party, we tried to get into “Science of Sleep” on Sunday night, but so was everyone else in Park City.

• Monday we got up early & waited on line to attend the premier of “Wristcutters: A Love Story.” Set in a parallel realm, all inhabitants have committed suicide, and this is the afterlife they are given. Filmed with a grayish overtone, where no bright colors are accessible & smiles are not possible, the movie could have been quite depressing. But instead, with a cast including Patrick Fugit on a search for his girlfriend, played by Leslie Bibb, Shannyn Sossamon, convinced she was sent here mistakenly, and guest spots by Tom Waits and Will Arnett, the script was kept light enough so you didn’t remember that they are actually dead.
• Then it was off to nap before Broken Social Scene played a party for the “Half Nelson” premier (more on this movie later, I promise!), we left early to catch the last half of the Beastie Boys/ Myspace party. They played for about 2 hours. We saw about 45 minutes. But what we saw was great. I will hopefully post a short video in a few days. Rachel Dratch of SNL was adorable standing on a chair to see above the crowd, dancing her ass off.

• Tuesday- my boy got up & left at the crack ass of dawn (around 7:45 for those of you counting) to wait on line for: Art School Confidential” at 11:30 am. (He is a comic book geek, but a cute one). He was third on line. I got to sleep late. We wound up getting free tickets from SPC just before they sold the extra tickets.
It was a cute movie, about what a talented artist is willing to do to get noticed. Or at least admit to. It starts Max Minghella, a fairly up & coming actor, Sophia Myles, (who played Isolde opposite James Franco in “Tristan & Isolde”) John Malkovich (yes, the). Definitely a movie that will do well in NY/La, etc. And the art community. Enough elements of comedy, love & real life to reign true.

• We stuck around for “Right at Your Door”, starting Rory Cochran & Mary McCormack. Focusing on a married couple in the aftermath of a dirty bomb going off in downtown LA. While parts cause you to question, such as the twist ending, the acting by these characters was absolutely amazing. They go though all the emotions- what do you do when the one you love has been exposed?
I thought it was shot really well, with the limited budget that they had. One minute LA looks fine. A few minutes later, it has been covered in white ash. Music is composed by Tomandandy. This film later won best cinematography.

• Wednesday morning we got up early to see “Puccini for Beginners.” While opera is referenced in this film, the focus is a lesbian, reeling from a recent breakup with her girlfriend, finds herself falling for a man, and then a woman as well. She balances the two relationships, until suddenly, she discovers what the audience already has- her current lovers are each’s former lover. Quelle Horreur!
This is a quirky little movie, in the essence of other semi- NY lesbian films, like “Kissing Jessica Stein”. However, all the actors are great in this. A cute 3rd date movie.

• Our Park City adventure ended with the Premier of “This Film is Not Yet Rated” How this movie got shafted on any awards is really beyond me, as it focuses on something Sundance is constantly struggling against- major corporations! Filmmaker Kirby Dick explores the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which has the responsibility of rating all films that are distributed in US Theaters. Over the past few years filmmakers, especially independent films that linger on the verge of subjects that are considered non-traditional. The MPAA is made up of a secret society who decides what is morally acceptable and not. Dick, hiring private investigators, is able to locate members of the MPAA, as well as the Appeals board. Dick presents an interesting film, focusing on censorship issues, board qualifications, and piracy. Receiving a NC-17 rating itself upon its first screening, (and Sundance even restricting attendance to 18+), this is definitely a movie for anyone who is interested in pursuing a filmmaking career.

Check back more this week for my SLC viewings!
xoxo
michele

I am so done with L.Lo

After being inundated this week by the New York press, I am officially declaring Lindsay Lohan a has-been starlet. Some may claim this to be a little hasty, or just plain unwarranted. But after two weeks of media domination (with a small exception about a bump with the surname Jolie-Pitt), I am exhausted hearing about Lindsay.

Her name is mentioned. I roll my eyes.

Within the past 13 days, she has:
· Had an hosted a new years party in Miami
· Had an asthma attack (and perhaps a pregnancy scare?), leading to hospitalization
· Graced the cover of Vanity Fair, claiming heartbreak & bulimia
· Issued a denial of such claims (if it was false, issue the denial to the Associated Press. Not Teen People.)
· Attended a Tarts of Pleasure DJ set at a local neighborhood bar of mine.
· Reportedly left Scarlett Johansson a message on the wall of said bar claiming “Scarlett is a bloody cunt”

Enough already with media coverage of this girl!

The only thing that makes this even interesting is that she is one of the few celebrities that still acts childish, and allow the paparazzi have access to it.

She has not had any a successful hit since “Mean Girls.” In movies or music. I know she has a bunch of movies in the works, including Garrison Keeler’s movie. But really- that is an ensemble piece, so I am not sure we will be able to warrant any success to Lindsay alone.

As for the Scarlett thing- how childish can you get? I understand, Scarlett may not be the friendliest person ever. But that is just natural when you are a New Yorker. Yes, Lindsay is a New Yorker too. But growing up in Merrick is like living in Richville, USA. You start getting manicures at age 4. Everyone kisses everyone’s ass. Being fake is in the genetic code.

Please don’t get me wrong- I wasn’t always tired of Ms. Lohan. I thought she was a great child actor & thoroughly enjoy “Mean Girls”. But after the car accidents, Jared Leto stalkings & other assorted media frenzies, can’t the press give it a rest. I know- sometimes she makes it so easy. But if you keep letting her act like this, she will be the youngest diva yet.

Some claim that the press only react to what sells to the public. So here is my cry to the public- Stop finding her gossip so juicy! I know this is hard- I alone find myself disgusted by the insane amount of celebrity gossip I know & read about. Eric Bana is my new favorite actor. And the woman who plays his wife is beautiful. While a lot of propaganda, the acting is excellent.

X Rated New Years party- drunk & throwing up by 2:30= successful night for me. It meant LNP didn’t see my boobs, so it was generally a successful night.

Exorcism of Emily Rose- interesting take on a thriller movie. But now 3am freaks me out

Undeclared- Best Underated show ever! Great cast in general, excellent guest stars (will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, etc). Figures Fox would cancel it. * Note to Producers- if you have a great show & Fox pick it up- Say goodbye to initial success. But never fret- you will get a cult following, release a box set & possibly even a feature film. Just look at the history.

Hostel- #1 rated movie at the box office. I will see this at 1pm in the afternoon one day, when it is bright & sunny out. When my other nightmares stop. I need to sleep at some point.

The Post Show- Season 1 available on DVD next week. Or just watch them for freel. Either way- see it. www.thepostshow.com

While I have been far from regular at posting, there will be even less in the near future. Sundance starts in 2 weeks. I will be there. So read :
Thefilmaddict.blogspot.com to get reviews of new indie movies on the market, as well as celeb sighting & gossip. And maybe a pic or two falling on my ass on a ski slope. This topic even became a conversation for debate within my family on Christmas Eve.

As a child of a mixed faith marriage, I personally would like to commend the companies that continue to use “Holidays” over “Christmas.” By using this term, you are being all inclusive (and thus non-offensive) to the people who do not celebrate Christmas. The phrase “Holidays” includes Hanukkah, Kwanza, and even the Winter Solstice for the practicing Wiccan, and whatever else my be practiced at this time (apologies for any that were not directly mentioned).

While I am far from being a Nationalist, the great thing about the United States is that we do not have a national religion. (if someone could remind our president of this again, things might be a little easier). We are a country that allows people to practice whatever they believe in, and even allows the halfies out their to celebrate their Christmakkah in peace (and current popularity).

To those who are offended- go lock yourself in a bomb shelter. You will probably be safer there until whatever cosmic event you believe in happens. While in there, you can teach your children your exclusionary ways. Best part is, since it is just you locked in there, they will never have to actually practice to be a bigot.

In New York, we have people excluding others due to race, income, housing, clothing & even haircuts sometimes. In a season meant to celebrate miracles of all kinds, let’s all become a little less sensitive. Otherwise, next year, retailers will just greet you with “Happy New Year”.

So on that note "Happy Holidays' to all of you out there. Hope your occasions were happy & that you don't pass out before midnight on New Year's.

xoxo
m

Day 3 & life goes on…

So it is now day 3 of the MTA strike and, well as the title suggests, life is going on.

New Yorkers are adapting, as they always do. Traffic was still heavy this morning, but I was lucky enough to get a cabbie who though charging me $15 to get to midtown was crazy. So he only charged $10. Which resulted in him getting a tip, which I have not been giving anyone who charges me the standard rate. (if I was going from the bottom of one zone to the top of a second, then I could understand the full charge. But not to go from half of one zone to half of the other.) anyway, my trip was quite pleasant, although long. My driver & I, along with 1 other passenger (they were not enforcing the 4 person rule as stringently) had a lively debate about the strike & the union workers, etc.
It looks as if the end of the strike is looming. We will see what happens.
Will the Transit Union go bankrupt?
Will they get everything they wanted?
And even better- will they get rid of Roger Toussant? He seems like an old school union worker who thinks that a scalding tongue will win the people over. Instead, they just hate him & view him as a nasty man.

Till day 4….

traffic sucks and so does the MTA

so the MTA transit strike is now in day two. what does that mean to all the transit reliant New Yorkers? Well, day one of the strike meant- work from home! To most new yorkers this is like the snow day that you get as a kid (or live in the suburbs). but when you live here, you get shafted, since the subways run...well underground.
but now day two of the strike has come & gone. what does this now mean?
-$15 cab rides (at least for me)
-arriving either early or last to work & either leaving early or late
-delayed christmas shopping (if you are still trying to do it like me)
-missed dinners & awful holiday goodbyes
-stressful trips trying to get to the airport

I personally do not agree with the tranist worker union striking. Even low level workers make more than I do (and I definately make a decent living as a corporate whore), and they get to retire at 55. 55! What are you going to do after you retire at 55 and still live in NYC? um, get another job? and you don't want to pay into your health insurance plan? Why not? Everyone else does!

I agree, you may not have a glamorous job. But at least you are working. at least you are capable of working. and striking. so suck it up, be fair, and help out your fellow new yorkers in the meantime.

Mis-Shaped

The downtown New York dance scene was capped off when the party Misshapes was created, hosted at the West Village gay bar Luke & Leroy’s. Hipsters from Brooklyn, the east village & beyond use to travel the 1/ 9/ A/C/E & F lines every Saturday night to get a spot into this party which hosted guest DJ’s from across the world.

You knew Misshapes was getting a little to big when it make the top 100 list on a trendy men’s magazine. And then Madonna showed up to launch her new album. So of course the fire marshall was going to show up & count how many underage hipster kiddies were hiding under the bar.

So alas, Misshapes moved to a bigger venue. Don Hills. Now I will admit that I have never seen a show at Don Hills, but I hear it use to be great. But that is besides the point.

Misshapes use to say they charged a cover of $5. However, that was a very indefinable $5. Basically, if you did one of the following:
- Knew Thomas the door guy
- Got there early enough
- Were a guy with at least a semi attractive girl
- Dressed out of the Urban Outfitters catalog
- Waited on line long enough
You were not charged. I fell in at least one of those options each time I attended (except for the guy one). It would be crowded, sweaty & smoky, but you danced you ass off & generally got cheap drinks.

Well, the Misshapes that we once knew is now debunked. The change in venue has caused the party to become a bit more exclusive- not only are they charging $10 a person (although the door guy right after Thomas is willing to make you a deal if you try hard enough), but they are now only comping their friends (still 90% of the attendees, but still..)

New York is too big, there are too many bars & there are too many good DJ’s to charge a cover! And this isn’t Chelsea. So it is the end of an era. Or at least Misshapes. Besides, I wouldn’t pay $10 to see a L.Lo movie. Why would I to see her in real life?

Go out Friday night instead. Hit Ultragrrl’s party at Orchard bar instead. Or Trash at Rafiffi. Saturdays always sucked anyway.
xoxo

my newest, although late, discovery

Finally I am going to post a subject relevant to what this blog is suppose to focus on.

I am in love with the new Dior Addict 2. While many would roll their eyes in annoyance, this is a rare find for me on many accounts.
1- I don’t really follow perfume all that much. I am lame that way. I have never really followed perfume lines too long. But this, I believe, is mainly because of reason number 2.
2- I can’t wear a lot of perfumes. I am very picky about what I like to smell like. In addition, I am one of those people who just can’t wear many perfumes. They just don’t smell right on me. And I am the girl who is always worried about being the smelly kid. Remember the smelly kid in class. Everyone mocked him or her, but always behind their back. No one had the guts (myself included) to tell the kid that a shower has to happen more than once a week!
So as a result, I couldn’t care less what SJP, Britney & Paris’ new fragrances smell like. It just isn’t my thing. I have had one scent, which I have used for almost 2 years. Sadly, it has been discontinued. And it keeps getting harder to find on ebay.
But now my problems are solved.

pickles make me thirsty

I know this sounds like an odd post title, but it is actually quite relevant being that the holiday season is a mere 3 days away.

My family is a rare cross breed of families that hosts not only a diversity of ethnicities when it comes to the holidays, but also religions. While we may be a majority of Eastern European descent, we were raised in a very Italian area. In addition, we have an array of religions across the family, as one marries or divorces this one and that one.

But there is one thing that remains constant across all the holiday tables. The pickles. (and olives). For those who know me, which would probably be anyone who is reading this, since I am not a brilliant blogger yet, this iver the years has been an important part of the family meal.

As a child, family members were forced to keep a close watch over me before we sat down to dinner, as I would slyly eat the entire bowl of olives & pickles. As I got older & my sister joined the family (a default by birth), we would either set up a lookout for this, or just snag enough for both. Now that I am older, it is sort of something that is still passed my way, after the meal. Except now it is more if a convenience thing- ugh, we have a handful left, give them to her to finish! While there are sometimes variations- the gourmet trend replaced the traditional green olive with greek olives, and brands of course vary by state, the base ingredients are always the same.

But throughout all these meals, family members & traditions, it is nice to know that one thing will always have a place on the table. Whether it is chicken or ham, water or wine, there will always be pickles.

I'm such a bad blogger!

So it has been about a month now & this poor blog has gone unnoticed. Not so much by anyone else. But my me, so of course by everyone else.

I got the itch a while back (no, I don’t have an std), and finally got one- because it is so hard to do. But anyway. I did one post. And then nothing. And so much has happened since then!
Namely
1- The Roxy got shut down right before the Motherf*cker Halloween bash. What a night to walk around in a vinyl corset.
2- Boston- Chinatown buses are great. Escape the city for $30. and then get to watch cable on-demand dating. Plus there is a great place to shop- www.thegarmentdistrict.com
3- The good news is I don’t have skin cancer. Yet.
4- Most importantly- Harry Potter tonight. Best part- On the Imax. Leave it to my boyfriend to insist. Not that I would have said no.

It is now cold in New York. Which means it’s holiday shopping time. If you have any good gift ideas, let me know. I have lots of people (and holidays) to shop for.
xoxo
michele

the wonderful world of hunnypot

well, i have finally jumped on the blog trend and gotten one of my very own. aww, how cute.

so here you will find info about all the random things I do..usually pop culture related (in some manner). movies, music, books, etc. i make no promises to make it original (there are so many good blogs out there, how can it be!) but feel free to make suggestions. the dumbest one will receive credit. and maybe a gold star.
xoxo
meeska
